What it is

VA.gov lets you download official letters that prove your benefits and service.

Letters you can download

VA's page lists these:

• Benefit summary and service verification letter
• Benefit verification letter
• Service verification letter
• Civil service preference letter
• Commissary letter
• Proof of service card
• Minimum essential coverage letter
• Proof of creditable prescription drug coverage
• Foreign Medical Program (FMP) enrollment letter

You must be eligible for the letter you request. Home loan Certificate of Eligibility is a different tool: use the housing COE tool on VA.gov, not this page.

Step by step

1. Go to the VA.gov page below and sign in.
2. Review the address on file that VA shows you.
3. Choose the letter you need and download it as a PDF. VA says you need the latest free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
4. Print it or send the PDF to whoever asked.

Your claim decision letters

To get a decision letter on a claim: sign in to VA.gov, go to Check your claim or appeal status, find the claim (a decided claim shows Status: Closed), select View details, then select Get your claim letters, and pick the letter. VA News says a letter is not available until the claim is closed. (VA News published these steps in February 2023, so screens may look a little different.)
