The DoW Cyber Apprenticeship Program
A 12-month paid federal apprenticeship that trains you for a cybersecurity career. I checked the flyer against the Department of War's own postings. Here is what it got right, what it left out, and what I would tell a Soldier sitting across from me.
What it is. The Department of War (DoW) — the same department most people still call the
Department of Defense, and both names show up on its own websites — runs a 12-month paid apprenticeship
in cybersecurity. An apprenticeship means you work a real, paid job while you are trained on the job, not
study first and apply later. It is built to move you toward government cyber careers like defending
networks and hunting intrusions. This is not a VA benefit. It is a federal hiring program, and I put it in
this binder because it is a real door into a paycheck and a career.
The 2026 doors are closed — do not sit and wait for a new flyer. Three separate 2026 job postings
ran between July 2 and July 24, 2026. The Department of War states applications are now closed and the
review of candidates has begun. No date has been announced for the next opening. That does not mean the
program is gone. It means the next window could open, and close, in a matter of days — so you get ready
now, not when you see it posted.
The 2026 postings — three different doors, three different rules
This is not one job with one paycheck. In 2026 it ran through three separate hiring agencies at the same time, each with its own grade, pay, location and rules. Read the one that fits you — do not assume the others don't.

Each posting also carried its own experience or education test. The DMDC posting, for example, required
one of: one year of specialized IT-security experience, one year of graduate school, or a bachelor's
degree with a 3.0 GPA or better, top-third class standing, or honor-society membership. The U.S. Cyber
Command and NSA/CSS postings did not require a degree or that level of experience at all. Read the "who
may apply" section on the actual posting before you decide you do or don't qualify — do not count yourself
out.
The floor everybody must clear
- 18 years or older
- A U.S. citizen
- Able to get, and keep, a government security clearance — how high depends on which posting, from Secret up to Top Secret with Sensitive Compartmented Information access
- Men born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with Selective Service

Certifications, and a shot at staying on
- Industry-recognized certifications in your training area
- The Department of War's own words: the chance to move into a permanent DoW civilian cyber position after you finish — no specific grade is guaranteed, so don't apply expecting one
★ A paid apprenticeship that can turn into a career job.
Claim your veterans' preference
- Veterans’ preference-eligible applicants are ranked above non-preference candidates when both are qualified. Claim it on your USAJobs application — don't assume it's applied automatically
- On the recent-graduate hiring path, the normal 2-year window after finishing school is extended to 6 years for veterans. If you graduated years ago and thought that door was shut, it may not be

- Build your USAJobs profile now, before there is a posting to rush for
- Have a federal-format resume and your DD-214 ready to upload
- Set saved-search alerts for both "cyber apprentice" and "cyber apprenticeship" — DoW posts this program under different titles through different agencies, so one exact title will miss the others

Ask your transition office
This flyer doesn't say how this program lines up with DoD SkillBridge or with using your own terminal leave to prepare while you're still in uniform. I spent two years in the transition office at Fort Riley. That is exactly the kind of question they sit there to answer — ask yours before you separate, not after.
