Certifications, licenses and access cards you can finish in under three months. I checked every timeline and every pay figure against the government's own data before I put my name on this page. Three of the ten are not certifications at all, and I say which ones and why.
Under the GI Bill, not out of your pocket.
Not just the test — the school.
Separate from, and in addition to, the GI Bill.
If a service-connected disability limits or prevents you from working, VR&E covers retraining, new skills, job finding and self-employment across five tracks. It is not the same pot of money as your GI Bill — using it does not use up your GI Bill.
Veterans and eligible spouses — including widows and widowers — get priority of service in Department of Labor-funded job training. That includes WIOA programs run through your local American Job Center, which fund exactly this kind of short credential. This applies whether or not you have GI Bill entitlement left.
This is the most expensive line on this whole page.
FMCSA's Military Skills Test Waiver can exempt you from both the CDL skills test and the required entry-level driver training — no school, no 3-to-6 months — if you apply within one year of leaving a military position that required operating a commercial-type vehicle, with two years of safe experience on equivalent trucks or buses and your commanding officer's endorsement of your driving record. That one-year clock is a hard deadline. Nobody tells a Soldier about it, and it is easy to miss by just not knowing.
Separately, FMCSA's Even Exchange Program waives the CDL knowledge test if you are currently licensed and were employed within the past 12 months in a qualifying military driving position — Army Motor Transport Operator, Fueler, or Patriot Launching Station Operator; Marine Corps Motor Vehicle Operator; Navy Equipment Operator; or Air Force Vehicle Operator, Fueler, or Pavement and Construction Equipment Operator.
| Credential | What it actually is | How long it actually takes | What it actually pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| CompTIA Security+ | IT security certification, private vendor | Varies. CompTIA publishes no required course length, and no federal source sets one. | No official wage is tied to holding this certificate. BLS (May 2025): computer support specialists, median $62,890/yr (about $30.24/hr); information security analysts, median $129,180/yr ($62.11/hr) — BLS lists a bachelor's degree as typical entry-level education for that role, and notes only that "some workers enter the occupation with a high school diploma and relevant industry training and certifications." |
| TWIC + NCCER Safety | TWIC is a TSA-issued security access card after a background check — not a course. NCCER safety coursework is a separate, private-vendor item. | TWIC: TSA's stated goal is a response within 30-45 days of enrollment, longer if fingerprinting has a problem. NCCER's length depends on the module and no official source publishes it. | No official wage is tied to holding a TWIC or an NCCER card by itself. Look up the wage for the specific trade you're entering instead. |
| Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) | Private certification, Scrum Alliance | Typically a short instructor-led course. No federal source sets a duration. | No official wage is tied to CSM alone. BLS, project management specialists: median $102,320/yr ($49.19/hr); lowest 10 percent under $61,580/yr; highest 10 percent over $167,970/yr — bachelor's degree typical. A two-to-five day course does not by itself place you in this occupation. |
| OSHA 30-Hour Outreach Training card | OSHA's own words: "an OSHA card is not considered a certification or license." The program is voluntary; OSHA does not require it. | OSHA sets no total course duration. OSHA caps training at 7.5 contact hours per day, so an in-person course takes at least four training days. Online self-paced versions run longer, on a timeline set by the provider, not OSHA. | No official wage is tied to the card. It is a jobsite entry requirement some employers and states impose, not a pay grade — and it does not by itself satisfy an employer's OSHA standard-specific training requirement, which the employer must still provide. |
| Google Data Analytics Certificate | Private, self-paced online certificate | Self-paced; completion time depends on hours per week you put in. | BLS publishes no "data analyst" occupation. Nearest comparisons: data scientists, median $120,230/yr ($57.80/hr, bachelor's degree typical, some employers require a master's or doctorate); or market research analysts, median $78,760/yr ($37.87/hr, bachelor's degree typical). A 2-3 month certificate is not a substitute for either degree in most job postings. |
| Medical Billing & Coding (CPC) | Private postsecondary certificate and exam | BLS: medical records specialists typically need a postsecondary certificate, though some qualify with a high school diploma and others need an associate's or bachelor's degree. No fixed program length is published. | BLS (May 2025), medical records specialists: median $51,140/yr ($24.59/hr); lowest 10 percent under $37,000/yr; highest 10 percent over $81,150/yr (about $39.02/hr). Hospitals pay more ($59,120 median) than physicians' offices ($47,120). BLS also flags that AI adoption in medical coding may affect future demand for this work. |
| Notary Signing Agent | A private designation layered on top of a state notary commission — there is no national rule. | Depends on your state. In Kansas: the Secretary of State commissions notaries for a four-year term. You need a stamping device and a $12,000 surety bond from a Kansas-licensed insurer, must be 18 or older and a Kansas resident (or a resident of a bordering state who regularly works in Kansas), and submit the application with a $25 fee. Kansas publishes no guaranteed processing time. | Per-signing fees are privately negotiated with title and escrow companies — no government source publishes them. What Kansas does require: any fee must be disclosed to the signer as permitted but not required by state law, agreed to before you notarize, collected at the time, and recorded in your notary journal. |
| CDL-A License | A state-issued commercial driver's license, not a certification. | If you drove trucks or buses in service, see the box above before you enroll. Otherwise: BLS puts truck-driving school at 3 to 6 months; accelerated private programs run shorter. There is no federal minimum hour requirement. | BLS (May 2025), heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers: median $58,640/yr ($28.19/hr); lowest 10 percent under $40,140/yr; highest 10 percent over $79,380/yr (about $38.16/hr). |
| Google Cybersecurity Certificate | Private, self-paced online certificate | Self-paced; no fixed length is published. | No official wage is tied to the certificate. BLS: computer support specialists, median $62,890/yr (about $30.24/hr); information security analysts, median $129,180/yr ($62.11/hr) — bachelor's degree typical for that role. |
| Phlebotomy Technician | Postsecondary certificate program; a postsecondary nondegree award is the typical entry credential. | BLS: programs usually take less than a year. Some accelerated programs run as short as a few weeks — that is not the norm, it is the fast end. Check your own state's health department too — licensure rules on top of the national certificate vary by state. | BLS (May 2025) median $45,230/yr ($21.75/hr); lowest 10 percent under $35,780/yr; highest 10 percent over $58,780/yr (about $28.26/hr) — that is the ceiling for the whole occupation nationally. No government source publishes a separate travel-assignment rate; treat any travel pay you see advertised as a recruiter's claim, not data. |
