VA Tutorial Assistance
Free tutor money when a required course is hard.
What it is
If a required course is hard, VA can pay for a tutor. It is extra help on top of your regular education benefit.
Who qualifies
All of these must be true:
- You are enrolled half time or more.
- Your instructor decides tutoring is necessary to complete the course.
- The course is required for graduation.
- The tutor is not a close relative.
What it pays
- Up to $100 per month, and $1,200 total over your lifetime.
- VA pays only your actual tutoring costs.
- Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill or DEA, none of your education entitlement is used up.
Tutorial assistance
How to get it, step by step
- Ask your instructor to write an approval letter to your school's certifying official.
- The school approves the need and assigns the tutor and hourly rate.
- Fill out VA Form 22-1990t, Application for Individualized Tutorial Assistance.
- You, the tutor and the certifying official all sign. Post-9/11 GI Bill users also get the instructor to sign section 18.
- Submit it monthly or when the tutoring is finished.

Traps to watch
- The signature date must be on or after the last tutoring session, or VA will not reimburse it.
- Do not pay a relative to tutor you; it will not be covered.
