Servicer timing. VA's own page says mortgage servicers have until 28 November 2026 to put this option in place. If your servicer says it cannot offer it yet, call VA at the number below.
What it is
The VA Partial Claim Program launched on 15 June 2026. It is one more way to avoid foreclosure if you have a VA-guaranteed home loan, are having a money hardship and have missed payments. After a three-month trial period, your mortgage servicer pays the overdue amount needed to bring the loan current, and VA pays that amount back to the servicer. VA says the overdue amount becomes a partial claim that generally does not have to be paid back right away. You pay it back when you pay off the loan, refinance it or sell the home.
Who it is for
VA's pages describe it for Veterans who:
have a VA-guaranteed mortgage
are having a financial hardship and have missed payments
complete a 3-month trial payment plan and show they can make the payments on time and stay current afterward
VA's servicer guidance also says you are not eligible if you received a partial claim within the past 24 months. VA counseling on foreclosure options is open to Veterans regardless of loan type and to surviving spouses. VA automatically assigns a counselor when a VA-guaranteed loan is 61 or more days past due.

How to get it, step by step
Call your mortgage servicer (the company you send your payment to) today. Do not wait until you are far behind. Tell them you have a VA loan, you have missed payments and you want to be reviewed for the VA Partial Claim.
The servicer reviews you for VA's loss mitigation options. VA's guidance says the partial claim is offered when the servicer is directed to it through VA's review order (the "waterfall"), so you may be offered a different fix first.
If you qualify, the servicer puts you on a 3-month trial payment plan. Make every payment on time.
When the trial plan is done, the servicer pays the overdue amount and VA reimburses the servicer.
If you cannot get a straight answer from your servicer, call VA (numbers below).

Other VA options if this one does not fit
VA lists six ways to fix a payment problem: special forbearance, a repayment plan, a VA loan modification, a 30-year modification, the VA partial claim and a 40-year modification. Other alternatives include a delayed sale, a short sale or a deed in lieu of foreclosure. Ask your servicer and VA which one fits your case.
Traps to avoid
You must finish the 3-month trial plan and show you can stay current. That is what VA requires before the servicer pays the overdue amount.
The partial claim is not free money. You repay it at payoff, refinance or sale.
VA's pages do not give a dollar cap or interest terms for the partial claim. Ask your servicer for the exact amount and terms in writing.
