GI Bill Flight Training

What it is

The GI Bill can pay for pilot training, but only under set rules and caps. It is not a way to start from zero: you must already hold a private pilot license.

Who qualifies

• You use the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty or Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve. DEA (Chapter 35) does not cover flight training at pilot schools.
• You already have a private pilot's license.
• On your enrollment date you hold a valid second-class medical certificate (first-class if you are working toward an Airline Transport Pilot certificate).
• The school is FAA-certified as a part 141 pilot school or part 142 training center, and the flight program is VA-approved.

What it pays

• Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty and Selected Reserve): 60 percent of the approved fees your flight school charges. You cover the other 40 percent.
• Post-9/11 GI Bill: VA pays the school the net tuition and mandatory fees, up to the yearly cap. The cap for 1 August 2026 through 31 July 2027 is $17,661.89. It changes every August, so check the current figure.
• Flight training does not get the standard books and supplies stipend under Post-9/11.

1. Confirm you meet the license and medical requirements above.
2. Confirm the school and program are VA-approved (use the GI Bill Comparison Tool).
3. Apply for education benefits with VA.

Traps to watch

• An unapproved school or program means VA pays nothing.
• An expired medical certificate on the enrollment date is a problem. Check the date before you sign up.
• Under the Montgomery GI Bill flight training uses up entitlement as VA pays fees, so ask how many months it will cost you.
