Every program on this page has been running for years, nationwide, with a federal statute or an established institution behind it. No one-off events, no single-county charities, nothing we could not verify on the program's own site.

More than 95 comfort homes at major military and VA medical centers. Families stay at no cost while a loved one is being treated. Private bedrooms and baths, shared kitchen and living space. There is never a lodging fee.
Donated frequent flyer miles are used to fly family members to the bedside of an injured service member.
Donated hotel points pay for a room when a Fisher House is full. Read the eligibility carefully — this is overflow from Fisher House, not a hotel program you apply to directly.
Pays you back for mileage, tolls, parking and authorized lodging and meals for approved VA health appointments. Caregivers can claim too. File through the BTSSS portal and payment usually lands within about a week.
Free van rides to and from VA medical facilities, driven by volunteers, at more than 247 VA locations. Contact the Hospital Service Coordinator for your area to book.
Free rides to VA health appointments arranged through VA itself, including some wheelchair-accessible options. Availability depends on volunteers in your area, so check with your local facility first.
Free private flights on a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots. Covers more than hospital runs — family visiting a service member in treatment, and travel to events that aid healing, including unit reunions.
Emergency travel planning and airline tickets for families during hospital recovery and rehabilitation.
These cost nothing and need no hospital in the picture. The two national park passes are the strongest benefit on this page for an ordinary veteran — free for life, and most people never claim them.
A free lifetime pass covering entrance and day-use fees at more than 2,000 federal recreation sites — national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, Bureau of Land Management land, Bureau of Reclamation land and Army Corps of Engineers land. Roughly a quarter of national parks charge an entrance fee, and a single carload can run $35.
It admits the pass holder and everyone else in one private vehicle where sites charge per car, or the holder plus three additional adults where sites charge per person.
A separate free lifetime pass for people with a medically determined permanent disability. It covers the same federal recreation sites as the Military Lifetime Pass, and it adds something the military pass does not: a discount on expanded amenity fees, including camping. At many sites that discount is half price.
If you have a service-connected disability you may be eligible for both passes. Compare them before you pick — if you camp at all, the Access Pass is usually worth more over a lifetime than the military one, and the camping discount is the reason.
Empty seats on Department of Defense aircraft. No fare, but no guarantee either — you fly standby, you may wait days, and you must be able to pay your own way home commercially if it does not work out.
These are real savings on ordinary vacations. They are discounts, not giveaways, and you still pay a bill at the end.
Full resort hotels owned by the Department of Defense: Shades of Green on Walt Disney World property in Florida, Hale Koa on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, and Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul. Room rates are set on a sliding scale by rank, so lower ranks pay less.
Free membership. Resort weeks at heavily reduced rates, typically a full week in one property with a kitchen and separate bedrooms rather than a hotel room. Best value if a whole week in one place suits you.
Flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises booked through the official DoD travel site, with proceeds supporting military MWR programs.
