SkillBridge: get paid to learn a job before you get out

Your last 180 days, working at a civilian company while the military keeps paying you. Full base pay, BAH, BAS and TRICARE. The company pays nothing, and legally cannot pay you.

The 180 days is a ceiling, not a starting gun

This is what kills most applications. Approval takes months, and some units want the package before your 180-day window even opens.

When to act, counting backward from your separation date 12 MONTHS OUT Start the conversation 9 MONTHS Apply to programs 6–9 MONTHS Package submitted for command approval 180 DAYS Earliest you can START
The trap nobody warns you about. SkillBridge is supposed to cost you nothing — the agreement says training costs are not to be imposed on the service member. But some programs still expect you to spend GI Bill entitlement on the training. That is months of education benefit gone, for something that should have been free. Ask the question before you sign anything.
And the one nobody believes. SkillBridge is not an entitlement. Every branch regulation says your commander may deny it. Eligibility is the easy part; the approval package is the whole game. If you are denied, ask for the reason in writing and come back asking for 90 days instead of 180 — most denials are about manning, and a shorter request is a different conversation.

How to find one, start to finish

Eight moves. This works in any state — swap the state filter and your own installation's local step, and the sequence is identical.

STEP 01Open the official locatorGo to skillbridge.mil and click Find an Opportunity. That is the only authoritative list. Skip third-party “best SkillBridge in [your state]” articles — they are scraped from this table and go stale as providers join and leave.
STEP 02Filter by state firstUse the state filter before you type anything in the keyword box. Filter twice and you will miss listings that do not use the words you guessed.
STEP 03Run a second search for remotePrograms offered online or across several states carry their own icon and may not appear under a single state filter. Search “remote” or “online” separately. A remote program erases relocation cost, which is the only line item that can genuinely cost you money.
STEP 04Expand each listingThe program description and the training duration live behind the expand arrow, not in the table row. Duration is what decides whether a program fits inside your approval timeline.
STEP 05Ask the four questionsContact the provider directly before you go further, and get the answers in writing. Does this use my GI Bill. What is your offer rate. Who pays relocation. Is the training live or self-paced.
STEP 06Do your installation's local stepMost bases add a requirement DoD does not mention. Hill AFB, for example, requires counseling at the Education Center before you start the application. Ask your own transition office what yours is before you build anything.
STEP 07Build the packetProvider acceptance letter with dates and a point of contact, your Individual Transition Plan, a manning impact statement, and a letter of support from your first-line supervisor. Cite the correct regulation chain for your branch.
STEP 08Route it early, and plan for a noSubmit early enough that approval lands before your 180-day window opens. If you are denied, get the reason in writing and come back asking for 90 days instead of 180. Most denials are about manning, and a shorter request is a different conversation.

One quirk of the list worth knowing. It only shows opportunities where the provider has an approved Organization, Program and Opportunity registered in the partner system. An approved company with paperwork still in flight will not appear. A blank result does not always mean there is nothing there — if you know a company hosts, ask them directly.

Ten free programs, shortest first

Ranked by time to complete, because the shorter the program the more room you have for approval delays. Every one below is free to the service member. Where a provider publishes an outcome number, it is here; where they do not, that blank is itself information.

Four questions to ask before you commit

Ask all four. In writing if you can. A provider who dodges any of them has told you what you needed to know.

Does this touch my GI Bill? The single most important question on this page. Some programs quietly expect you to spend entitlement on the training. A free program does not need your GI Bill. If the answer is anything but a flat no, walk.
What is your offer rate?DoD now requires providers to show at least 75% of completers receive a qualifying offer. You have every right to ask. Good programs are above 70%. Below 40% and you are gambling six months of your career.
Who pays for relocation? The one real money gap. Get relocation, travel, lodging, equipment and certification costs in writing before you commit. A good host already has a one-pager. A vague answer is a red flag.
Is the training live or self-paced?DoD now requires at least half the training to be live and person-led. Fully self-paced programs are being removed from the approved list. If it is a video library, it is not a fellowship.

The money, straight

Most of what people worry about here is not a real problem. One thing is.

Your pay does not stopYou stay on active duty the entire time. Full base pay, BAH, BAS and TRICARE continue. This is not unpaid leave and it is not a career break.
The host legally cannot pay youDual compensation is prohibited by federal law. Do not turn down a good program expecting a salary on top, and do not accept one that promises you wages.
Bonuses and stock need careA signing bonus has to land after your separation date, on a W-2. Vesting dates that hit while you are still on active duty are a gray area. Ask your command before you sign anything.
Relocation is the actual gapTravel and temporary lodging for an out-of-state program are generally not funded by DoD. Some hosts cover it, many do not. This is the only line item that can genuinely cost you money.
Remote is a real optionMany of the strongest programs run remote or hybrid cohorts. If relocation is the obstacle, filter for remote before you rule the whole thing out.
Stack it in the right orderTAP early, then SkillBridge, then terminal leave to your DD-214, with a BDD claim running underneath. Done that way, a job, a rating and a paycheck all land at separation instead of six months after.

Cutting the one cost that is real

Relocation is the only line item that can genuinely take money out of your pocket. If the program is remote, this section does not apply to you at all — and that is the cheapest answer available.

If you do have to move, you are still on active duty for the whole thing. That keeps doors open that close the day you separate.

Lodging on the installationIf there is a base near your host, temporary lodging and MWR recreational lodging are open to you — you are still active duty. Usually the cheapest bed within driving distance of anywhere.
Military campgrounds and RV parksMWR runs campgrounds and RV sites at installations across the country, at rates that make a four-month stay realistic if you have a camper or a trailer.
American Forces TravelThe Department of Defense's own booking portal for flights, hotels and rental cars. Open to you on active duty, and proceeds go back into MWR programs.
Armed Forces Vacation ClubFree membership, heavily reduced resort weeks with kitchens and separate bedrooms. Built for vacations, but a full week at a reduced rate is a week of lodging.
Read this before you plan around it. Most veteran travel and lodging assistance — Fisher House, Hotels for Heroes, Hero Miles, VA travel pay, DAV vans — requires a medical appointment, illness or injury. None of it covers relocating for a fellowship. Do not build a plan on it. And do not count on Space-A: it generally requires leave or pass status, and SkillBridge is permissive duty. Confirm with the terminal before you assume a seat.

Every claim on this page traces to one of the documents below, checked 8 August 2026. Where a provider's own page is linked on a card, that is where its duration, certifications and outcome figure came from. Provider details change without notice — confirm before you commit six months of your career.

Where a card has no link. We only link a provider page we read directly. For the rest, the program is named and you should find it through the official locator above rather than a search engine — aggregator lists go stale as providers join and leave.

Where to verify all of this

The only authoritative list of approved providers is the official DoD locator. Aggregator sites and “top 100” lists go stale fast as programs join and leave. Use the official site: skillbridge.mil.

The governing documents are 10 U.S.C. § 1143(e) and DoDI 1322.29. For Army Soldiers the chain runs DoDI 1322.29 → AR 600-81 → MILPER 25-116. Cite the right one in your package; citing the wrong document tells your commander you did not do the work.

Program details change constantly. Durations, certifications and outcome rates on this page were checked on 8 August 2026 against each provider's own published material. Confirm with the provider before you commit six months of your career.
